I like this idea, and could've sworn I've seen it done someplace (but can't find the URL anymore).
I get the feeling that Medium.com is trying to build a platform for this too. The date is still there, but it's deemphasized and placed at the bottom, instead of in the byline. Someone could easily append "2014 edition" to the title - or perhaps, Medium could offer that feature too.
