It happens over and over that browser makers dictate something that makes sense in a nice, pure theoretical context, but sucks ass for everyone stuck in the real world with all its complexities and shortcomings.

“Browser makers” in this context generally just means Google, though this particular proposal came from Clint Wilson from Apple.

Google calls the shots and the others fall in line.
