VAE was invented in the EU (critical parts of diffusion models, like the U-net were also from here). Lots of other fundamental contributions are from here too. Edit: I initially wrote diffusion, but this is wrong-- I never meant diffusion.

The US dominates the commercial space in LLMs, but the EU is much further along in that too than may be immediately apparent.
