Somewhere I read a story of someone administrative back in the 1960s dropping a card deck on the floor. "No problem," they said, "I'll just re-sort it" which was exactly what you'd do with a program deck. Unfortunately, it wasn't a program: it had been a table of random numbers which, upon sorting, became worthless.
