I would look at this from a different angle: do not pursue things just because other people claim[0] you will be happier upon acquisition; pursue the things that you have reasonable objective reason to believe will increase future you's effective range of possible actions.

[0] hint: sales managers love when their reps get into watches or boats or planes or "houses suitable for entertaining"...

This resonates - a meaningful life is far important to pursue, and meaning for the most part is tangible - you know immediately when you are stuck in a rut, that means time for a change.

Happiness is too fleeting IMO.
