The article praises VMS (Files-11) file name syntax for keeping the complexity in front, rather than hiding it, only to reveal it elsewhere.

As someone who was horrified by VMS file names well before I encountered Unix, I've always found this... fondness... for VMS puzzling.

I recommend Rob Pike's paper, "The Hideous Name" as an antidote to VMS file names.
