Apparently med school applications were up 18% (in 2020). Which surprises me, I would think COVID might have scared more people off.

Or talking to doctors, or listening to what doctors write and say: https://jakeseliger.com/2012/10/20/why-you-should-become-a-n...

Great article. Unfortunately medicine continues to attract endless applicants. Universities have worked out that people will eat broken glass and pay for the privelege if they think it will raise their status.

> if they think it will raise their status.

It's still true though - it's one of the highest status professions out there.

That was a sobering read

One university in the UK is offering students a £10K bung to defer their studies for a year.

People are actually inspired by it.

Their perception is actually being a doctor is so far away that things will be solved by then.

just wait until they realize being a doctor at a hospital is more bureaucratic than actually practicing medicine.

Isn't that the case for any white collar job. Just look at the endless complaints on HN from developers about meetings.

Every medical resident in history has that experience, but the majority still do the work everyday. There is some level of disillusionment in every discipline.
