That way each user can sign into their work machine using their Google account, instead of having a separate username/password.

Oh, I always thought that was somehow done by using LDAP for user authentication and some syncing magic.

This seems to make it much simpler for IT to handle.

This has been possible for many years using Google sync (syncs local ad accounts and passwords to Google apps)
