I have a bunch of computers at home for the family to use and a NAS system for data. All I lack to make it work well is central login. Openldap looks like my best bet, but I haven't figured out the obtuse configuration syntax.

Use Samba4. It's an easy to use LDAP/Kerberos/DNS system that looks after itself. Or if you're more Unix inclined, there's FreeIPA.

Unless this is old, here's the code for Google's credential provider. It's not plug and play by any means.
