China in happening.

And speed

Done.

This is great news now that the industry phased out physical audio connection on phones in favor of wireless. Good job, guys.

USB-C DACs are inexpensive and widely available.

Ah, yes, the dongle, it means you choose between charging or headphones, and your port is more susceptible to damage.

There was no reason to remove it in the first place.

This vulnerability is about injecting keystrokes into connected wireless keyboards and mice.[1] With the phone industry adoption of USB-C, they've made wired easier than ever before.

What does this have to do with the fact that now people have to switch on bluetooth for audio, instead of having a cable connection? And an attack requiring a physical cable connection is a little bit more visible, and less viable if I have my phone in my hand, than a wireless attack via bluetooth, don't you think?

You don’t “have to” switch to only wireless. There are plenty of inexpensive usb-c DACs and even the overpriced Apple usb-c to 3.5mm adapter is a whopping $9.

> This is great news now that the industry phased out physical **audio** connection on phones in favor of wireless.

I recognize that there’s still wired audio connectors but you know full well that the experience is not great because the industry wanted to remove audio jacks.

This comment is generating far more snark than the parent to be frank.

Not everyone wants to use a USB-C dongle so they can use their old 3.5 headphones, and even more people don’t really care about being able to have a mouse and keyboard on their phone in the first place.

If you want me to show you what the “thoughtful discussion” is: The parent made the point that phone companies have been following a trend of locking down physical access in favor of wireless tech. I’ll add that this has not only removed beloved features, but now that everyone is being forced down the Bluetooth/wifi stack we are far more susceptible in public when exploits like these rear their ugly heads. There are roundabout solutions like using a USB-C dongle but… really? Does anyone find that to be effective at all? What about when you want more than one connection? You need a splitter or a hub. It’s just such a seemingly useless “improvement” if it feels like we’re going backwards having to buy extra stuff.

If you want to reply with your disagreement, please do so in a thoughtful manner. Please think before you post. I come to this website not for snark, but for thoughtful conversation ;) Ty

My phone has both audio jack and USB-C.

Yet you reply with snark? Be the change you want to see in this world.

I don't know about TOR alternatives, but Stremio + real debrid is amazing, or so I hear.

That's an interesting way of saying that covid killed less people than the flu last winter.

Are the CDC stats still based on "died with covid", or did that change to "died of covid" at some point? Serious question, I stopped paying attention awhile ago.

Died of covid is hard to prove, that’s why the alternative was used in the first place. Only excess mortality really showed the real impact.

Of course the deniers continuously moved the goalposts, claiming that the lockdowns themselves caused the excess mortality. This was trivial to disprove by pointing them at countries that locked down early and had no excess mortality. It’s still crazy to me how one group can have a chain of incorrect assertions, but then continue to make new ones without any self awareness.

Sure but if you apply “died with” to e.g. the common cold it would appear quite deadly, no? It’s an absolutely useless statistic, and the fact that it was used for IFR everywhere I saw early on without massive asterisks is very, very odd. And then it wasn’t replaced by “died of”, it was just obfuscated (on CDC anyway).

What was the alternative? A sub-optimal way of measuring is always preferable to no way.

> A sub-optimal way of measuring is always preferable to no way.

I question this claim.

I can give you an example right now on something I’m working on.

I have an algorithm that either gets something correct or it doesn’t. My measurement system is also not infallible and will sometimes give out the wrong data, such that it is not possible to know whether the algorithm got it wrong, or the original data was wrong.

We still use the combined error as a KPI since it gives an overall health of the system, even though we cannot know the individual error rates. If the KPI tanks it tells us something is wrong and we can investigate. Could be the algorithm, could be the measurement equipment. It’s not perfect, but not having any KPI would mean we would be completely blind to any problems at all.

You will find the world is not perfect and compromises have to be made.

Is the output of your work used to inform the public on a health danger which determines their level of fear and support or opposition to response measures?

Obviously something like this is reasonable in some cases. Just because it is reasonable in some cases does not mean it is reasonable in every case.

Compromises should not be misleading, let alone extremely misleading.

So what was the alternative? Hide the measurement? Not measure at all? What specifically would you have done differently?

Once the excess mortality data came along it confirmed people lots more people were dying than normal, and therefore of covid, so how is it misleading? If anything saying with covid is the opposite of misleading since you are specifying the caveat of the measurement up front?

> It’s still crazy to me how one group can have a chain of incorrect assertions, but then continue to make new ones without any self awareness.

This is the nature of "I have a viewpoint that must be true at all costs." It's why, in the face of extreme evidence to the contrary, they'll go full conspiracy theorist before they'll entertain the idea that their original, unfounded beliefs might be incorrect.

Hospital acquired COVID is a serious problem

No doubt iOS has great exclusive apps, however, Android has some gems as well. Newpipe, Buzzkill, the ability to have any browser engine you want, 3rd party app stores, 3rd party launchers, I'm sure I'm forgetting some other perks. Both platforms have their strengths.

I find it really ironic that these rich people imagine that they will have a great time after some apocalyptical shit goes down, just because they've built or bought a bunker/shelter/island somewhere. The thought that their survival will remotely resemble the lifestyle they have today is hilarious.

So ok, you've build yourself a small city with self-generating energy capacity for decades. You got running water and transportation. You can manage all the waste you produce. You stored a lot of food, and can somehow produce more food. You have some sort of health care/emergency plan figured out.

So now, who is gonna maintain all that infrastructure for you? Your employees? For what? Money? What the hell are they gonna need money for now that civilization has ended? Loyalty? Why? What is keeping your guards from killing you and your family and taking control? Or worse, making you their slaves. It's survival of the most well armed and organized from day one. All you have is money in banks and you name written on pieces of papers stating you own stuff. All of that amounts to nothing from the moment the ICBMS fly.

It's all illusions for these people. Like the pharaohs thinking they were gonna cheat death and keep all the riches and power. It's pure desperation and trying to throw money at the problem, just to create hell on earth for themselves.

On end of civilization situations, the lucky ones are those who die soon and without realizing what happened and what's to come for the survivors.
