The world's best talent is distributed globally, and so are we - we're a company founded in San Francisco, but with a team based all around the globe. Across our various timezones, cultures, and geographic distance, there is definitely one common thread among us: We are passionate about helping analytically-minded leaders use insights to supercharge their subscription businesses!
We operate totally asynchronously (no internal company meetings! Really!) and autonomously (no one will tell you what to do; everyone has context on the big-picture company goals and you will figure out how to work towards them with the rest of the team).
Diversity & Inclusion is at the core of how Subscript works
Our asynchronous and autonomous model is built around inclusion - we know that everyone has their own life setup, likes/dislikes, and ways of working. We're never going to tell you how or when you need to work, so you can do what works for you. We're a global team that actively celebrates different cultures and backgrounds - and with people in 5+ countries, they are different. We want Subscript to be the place you can do your best work, no matter who you are. Come join us.
Chiffer | Senior / Principal Software Engineer | REMOTE (Global) & Async | Full Time
Chiffer helps finance teams at subscription companies better understand and manage revenue data and analytics. We're well funded, and are a completely global team based all around the world.
Senior or Principal Software Engineer
- You'd be one of the first five engineers on the team, and the first very senior hire.
- You'll work on database design and implementation, complex data management problems, API design and implementation, some front-end React app code, building and iterating on our product, collaborating with designers and founders, and making a product that users will love.
The way we work:
- We are a remote company - work anywhere you want! Any timezone on earth (or outside earth, whatever)
- We are an asynchronous team - we don't do scheduled meetings, and rely on each team member to pick their own schedule and to communicate clearly in writing and with recorded videos
- We operate completely autonomously - no one will tell you what to do, we'll just tell you the goals and you will figure out how to work towards them with the rest of the team
- Like all start-ups we're scrappy, but not scrappy on compensation: Chiffer is committed to paying our awesome team members at market-rate, including benefits.

You will never do unimportant work: every contribution will make a clear and tangible impact on the company’s trajectory. Your personal success will be directly aligned with that of the company.

Tools
Front Row is a polyglot combination of multiple web applications, mobile apps and asset generation tools. The front-end uses Backbone.js, several plugins and grunt.js for automation. The backend is predominantly made of Clojure-based app talking to PostgreSQL. Our tooling is a mix of Ruby scripts and Haskell apps. Operations relies on Ansible and Vagrant, with AWS for hosting.
Nice-to-haves
You have worked at a startup before
You have worked in small and effective Agile/XP teams before
You have delivered working software to large numbers of users before
You are fluent in functional programming
You have a strong understanding of full-stack development, and are comfortable jumping from the front-end back to the DB if need be.
Front Row - our mission
It's a sad reality that students from poorer families perform worse in school than students from wealthier families. Part of this reason has to do with home environment and absentee parents, but much of it has to do with inferior resources and less experienced teachers. The worst part of this problem is that if a student falls behind in any grade, they will forever be behind in every grade. So even if the probability of falling behind in 3rd grade is low (it isn't), the probability of falling behind in 3rd grade or 4th grade or 5th grade (and so on) is really high.
That's the core problem Front Row solves - it doesn't let students fall behind. And if they fall behind, it catches them up really quickly. And it does this even if the teacher isn't very good (although better teachers always help). Now, the probability of falling behind in any given grade is irrelevant, because it will never compound. The student who would have been the most at risk will instead be up to speed, and therefore far more motivated.

The best book I have ever read (and continue to re-read) on writing is "On Writing Well" by William K. Zinsser. Mostly the first half of the book - it's incredibly valuable.
It's also available in paperback (for $10!). If you're serious about learning to write well, it's well worth putting down the Kindle and going "old school" on this one.
Yeah, I'm just not from the US so I don't like to wait for the package to arrive, pay extra for the shipping, then have it clear customs, etc. Kindle provides instant gratification and all that :-)
I'm not in the US either, but patience is a virtue, and good things come to those who wait. The Kindle is great, but don't let it form the limit of your world.
