> Why doesn't Google Analytics fix this?

fix? They are giving you the data you asked for. You can ignore web requests based on referer. Why are you sending these places data back? You are wasting bandwidth.

well......I have maintain the full stack on the sites I care about, so I would ignore based on referer, but i acknowledge not every dev has this luxury. I would be mad if a statistical analysis app fudged my numbers as default.

>But I've also seen the other kind of "failure". The kind where the controls came out perfectly, but the effect or the association or the expression profile that the researcher was hoping for didn't show up. When these sorts of failures are ignored or discarded, then we do science a huge disservice.

Why does this happen? Clearly this is what the article insinuates. Is publish or perish that strong? Every honest experiment with honest results benefits society. Not every prediction and result combination results in a prize in your lifetime, but that in no way should influence someone's value as a scientist. That science may be used later for something we had not intended (could i offer you the hope of posthumus recognition?). Finding a way it does not work may save someone else some time. This benefits the scientific community.

Not everyone gets to walk on another planet, some people have to build the ship.

For better or worse, most scientific journals still operate on a business model dependent on physical subscriptions. Since this sets something of a limit on how much can be published, and since scientists tend to prefer paying for positive results vs negative, there has been a strong cultural bias toward favoring positive results.

The good news is that this is gradually changing. As scientists begin to understand that online distribution models don't have the same sorts of limitations, and that search can be a powerful tool, there has been a move toward at least collecting negative results. Of course, they still don't benefit the scientists in the "publish-or-perish" world, but even that may be changing...maybe...

This is only effecting individuals. Massive companies are going to use the front office mail address.

SWAT-ing is really one of the less serious things that could happen. Crazy nutjobs are born every day. Someone didn't like a banner on my website, now they know where to find me, and they brought tanks. Meaning that it could be the government you are peaceably criticizing.

I agree with you. Because using completely invented information makes me a liar. And why do they need it? Its not like they are sending packets to that address. We should stop every invasion of freedom no matter how well it is sold.

ICANN is only the authority because we all said they are the authority. Do you know the fight that would break out if we lost faith in ICANN and multiple firms in the right economic place who know the right people at the right time provided an alternative authority? The switch to ipv6 is already weakening ICANN authority. The value of an ip address is decreasing.

We have to trust someone. End users are not gonna type in ip addresses human brains just aren't wired like that. But talking with any government is not cool. ICANN is a trust all citizens of earth currently agree on. ICANN is the global diplomat they need diplomatic immunity - and need not abuse it.
