And that's exactly what we're doing, with the travel app to plan, track, and relive your journeys in a smart and beautiful way. Our product is at the core of everything that we do, and we always put our users first, so you will always have all the space you need to build things in the best possible way - there's a reason why we have a 4.8 star user rating on both Play Store and App Store ;)
We have over 3.5 million users and with travel activity picking up in the last few months, we are looking to expand our product team to be ready for what's coming. More specifically:

Love the teleporter, very unique. I somewhat expected Polarsteps to be involved with the booking process but I see it's more of a guidebook/journal. Very cool regardless.
Hi Alex! Actually, that's where we're heading to: with the series A investment we have just closed we aim to bring the inspiration and booking phases of travel into our app, to really turn it into an end-to-end platform. We already have prototypes ready, we just need to expand our team to start iterating on the initial versions of it :)
Every day, our team is working on creating the best travel app out there, building the place to go to for people that want to plan, track and remember their adventures around the globe. After launching in 2015, Polarsteps is now used by almost 1.000.000 travellers from 180+ countries. Our app was featured in Apple's WWDC keynote speeches of 2017 and 2018, and just recently Google created this amazing short video about us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYcBqtOwLcg
We're based in the historical center of Amsterdam. We’re an enthusiastic and multi-faceted team of 8 with a passion for travel, design and code. You'll be working closely with us building a super awesome travel app that people genuinely love.
Backend at Polarsteps:
At Polarsteps, we care deeply about ensuring a seamless, top quality user experience for all our travelers. We provide a fundamentally new type of product that is continuously iterated and improved. As a backend engineer at Polarsteps, you can expect to work with a small team across these challenges. This includes everything from scaling our rapidly growing application, to writing complex business logic that enables new product features.
Our ideal candidate:
You’re a seasoned, professional and pragmatic developer with a feel for product and 5+ years experience. You love to travel and enjoy solving complex challenges. If in addition to this, you have experience with large-scale (python) backend platforms, then you’re the rainbow unicorn we’re looking for.
Benefits, perks, the cool stuff:
- Stock options!
- Competitive salary
- Work/life balance
- Be part of a fun, international team
- Awesome office in the center of Amsterdam, one of the most cosmopolitan and beautiful cities in the world
- 30 vacation days (25 ‘regular’ days + 5 Teleporter™ days, see below)
- Relocation assistance (if needed)
- We believe that regardless of stock options and salary, what will really make you richer are your travel experiences. So once per year you’ll use our Teleporter™: with the push of a button, it will go through all of the locations logged by our users and select a random one > 1.000km away from Amsterdam. This is where your next adventure will take place! The flight is on us. Try it out here: https://www.polarsteps.com/teleporter
P.S. As for our tech stack, we’re constantly aiming for the best possible setup based on our needs as we scale (we take over&under engineering mishaps very seriously!) - we’re hosted in Heroku, use Amazon S3 for media storage, python (Flask) in the backend/API, CloudFront + Lambda@Edge for caching, AngularJS in the frontend, and native apps in iOS and Android. We have single-command build&deploy tasks for production and staging, and we do automated testing with protractor on the web, XCTest on iOS and UI Automator on Android.
Polarsteps | Senior iOS and/or backend engineer | Amsterdam, NL | ONSITE (we can sponsor your visa & help you with relocation)
We're a young startup on a mission to radically change the way travelers plan, track, and remember their adventures. We've built the best travel tracker out there, and we're embarking on our next journey: making your trip planning a breeze. To get a feel of what we're building, you can download the Polarsteps app here: https://www.polarsteps.com/app (we've been featured in the WWDC 2017 Keynote and multiple times in the App Store).
We’re a fully funded, enthusiastic and multi-faceted team of 6 with a passion for travel, design and code, and you'll be working closely with us building a super awesome travel app that people genuinely love.
The challenge lying ahead of us is huge, but if we push the right buttons we honestly believe we'll forever transform the way people travel.
=== Our ideal candidate ===
You’re a seasoned, professional and pragmatic developer with a feel for UI/UX. You love to travel and believe in metrics and stats as a means to understand our users' behaviour as much as you care about their explicit feedback. In addition to this, if you have iOS experience and successfully released one or more apps in the App Store, or if you have experience with large-scale backend platforms, then you’re the rainbow unicorn we’ve been looking for.
=== Benefits, perks, the cool stuff... ===

Android Engineer at Polarsteps (talented all-rounders are welcome too) | Amsterdam, NL | Onsite, relocation within EU
====================
TL;DR: want to have fun working for an awesome travel startup? -> max at polarsteps dot com
====================
Join our journey! We're a young startup building a beautiful and easy to use travel tracker/journal, which will eventually become THE platform for planning, tracking and remembering your trips. We believe that the current online travel ecosystem is utterly fragmented (did you know the average traveller visits 40+ sites to book a trip?) and we are on a mission to fix that.
The first version of our product has been live on the web and iOS since April 2015 and with 0€ spent on marketing/user acquisition we’ve already attracted over 20K users. Together they logged over 3 million locations using the Polarsteps iPhone app (you can check out the 5 month adventure all the way from northern Europe to the southernmost point of Africa by one of our founders here: https://www.polarsteps.com/niek/615-amsterdam-to-cape-town-b...).
We’re a fully funded, enthusiastic and multi-faceted team of 5 with a passion for travel, design and code, and we’re looking for someone interested in leading the efforts of building the first version of our Android app from the ground up. You’ll be working closely with the rest of the team creating a super sexy travel app that people genuinely love!
===== Do you have what it takes? =====
You’re a professional and pragmatic developer with a feel for UI/UX. You love to travel and believe in data as much as you believe in user feedback. In addition to this, if you have Android experience and successfully released one or more apps in the Google Play Store then you’re the rainbow unicorn that we’ve been looking for. BTW, at this moment we can only consider you if you are eligible to work within the EU, sorry about that!

Upcoming.nl - Amsterdam, NL (No remote, but we'll relocate you) - Full Stack Engineer
Upcoming is a Dutch 'listicle' website (a listicle is an article consisting of a list of funny/informational/sentimental/whatever stuff). We've been growing continuously since we launched in 2013, already reaching 15% of the Dutch population with zero € spent on marketing. We're (an independent) part of Telegraaf Media Groep, one of the biggest publishers of The Netherlands.
We use python in the backend (Flask, Celery+RabbitMQ), and manage the frontend with Jinja2, jQuery, LESS and Grunt; persistence is done with MySQL and Redis. The deployments are automated, in a Continuous Integration environment. Our backend is developed in-house, with state-of-the-art publishing related features (monitoring of 1000's of feeds to detect trending articles, headline and thumbnail A/B testing, advanced CTR optimizers...).
Since we're part of a big media group, some of these tools are now being used by other teams, reaching tens of millions of users every day.
We'd like to bring on board a pragmatic developer. A CS degree helps, but relevant web experience is more important for us. We'd love it if you have spent some time across the whole stack, but if you consider yourself "just" a frontend or backend developer, we'll hear you out too.
We offer:
- A perfect balance between working on innovation projects and “regular” web development, both with short and iterative development cycles.
- The flexibility and dynamism of working in a startup, with the strong stability of being part of a big company.
- An international environment
- Relocation assistance
- A competitive salary
- 25 vacation days
- Amsterdam! You’ll be living in one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities in the world.
