> Steve truly understood the virtue and value of that cultural component to not just attract but _retain_ that kind of world-class talent, and _that's_ what he attributes Pixar's success to.

Both Jobs and Pixar’s Ed Catmull believed this so strongly that they took illegal measures to protect it:

Unfortunately there was one in the Buffalo area in 2009:

Beverly Eckert, Sept. 11 Widow and neighbor of a friend, died on that flight. Still makes me sad for their family.

Microsoft uses AKS for their production workloads, but only for “minor” projects like “Office 365” which only has a “few” (200 million) users.

What on God's green earth makes you think MS is going to release their dirty laundry to the public about one of their products using another one of their own products?

Like there's a litany of literature of how AKS completely dropped the ball, you don't have to take anyone's word on it from this thread. The difference between AKS and other offerings is _striking_.

Plug for Dave Plummer's youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@DavesGarage

Dave was an engineer on NT and creator of Task Manager and zip folders. Lots of interesting stories and anecdotes from that period on that channel.

The built in zip folders that Dave wrote aren't something to be proud of these days, they are super slow and basic.

The Zones of Thought series by Vernor Vinge, and A Deepness in the Sky in particular.

If you check the series out, and I highly recommend you do, read it in order. Which would mean starting with A Fire Upon the Deep, which is excellent.

Thanks for the rec, put it on my tbr. I have only read True Names by VV.

True Names is excellent! A Fire Upon the Deep is also one of my favourite sci fi novels.

Thanks, added to my list. The afterword by Minsky made True Names even more memorable.

This might be considered a spoiler: https://web.media.mit.edu/~minsky/papers/TrueNames.Afterword...

Seconded

For more information on the technique the parent describes in point #1, I recommend the book "Moonwalking With Einstein" by Joshua Foer.

While your concern is certainly very personal, and a deeply rooted preference over which you have little control, I have to point out that body shaming can have disastrous effects on the recipient[1].

Aging spares no one. Worth reflecting on.

Canada is a net exporter of food and agriculture commodities.

Yep, Canada will be fine as long as we don't want fresh vegetables in winter and can increase the capacity of our abattoirs.

I think I could live off rolled oats and beet sugar for quite a long time in any case!

Please continue. It’s sorely needed here.

Rest assured, I will. I've just been busy of late.

Most of the time, it doesn't turn into some minor debacle. I'm reasonably well respected here for giving my views about gender issues, homelessness and a few other things.

But the forum gets about 5 million unique visitors a month and not everyone is going to recognize me and yadda. So sometimes things don't go smoothly due to the random number generator called life.

How about “wrote the Doom engine, then the Quake engine”. Good start?
