> Comparing Unix/Linux running on a PC and a iOS/Android running on a smartphone is insanity. And comparing software repos with app stores is just as bad.

Strange idea. How is comparing two types of consumer-market computers and ecosystems is "insane"?

The parent comment is pretty legit IMHO.

Calling Unix/Linux a "consumer-market" OS is quite a stretch.

You should update your knowledge of modern operating systems.

My mom and my wife parents are extremely happy with Ubuntu computers. They do browsing, email, Skype, print stuff and whatever else they need just fine. That are way more happy with Ubuntu than they were with Windows, and I am, too, cause in the last three years I have spent exactly zero minutes maintaining their computers. If that's not a consumer-market OS, I don't know, what is? Windows? When mom used it, she always had one problem after another with it. I'm truly sorry for anyone who has to deal with it every day.

Thank you too! This reminds me that I should probably thank people more often (both in private and public). It sure does help to support and spread some positive vibes.

I read HN daily and learn so much more from discussions. Every time I meet someone who could be interested and contribute to this community I suggest them to take a look, and often people get hooked, just like I was.

So, thank you and best wishes to the mods and the whole HN community! Happy 2020!

Those are great products built for different purposes, thus, with different mechanics to support those purposes.

Eve.QA is built using Discourse.org - a forum engine built with the purpose of supporting civilized discussions.

Our business model doesn't stipulate collecting lots of your data to distract you with ads - we're offering branded channels to our supporters.

Another advantage IMHO is what Eve.QA lacks:

1) doesn't and will not have the "reposting" feature, so no (or less) viral spread of content.

2) its FOSS without all the "black box" magic to "curate" content for you.

3) no vendor lock-in, means you can start your Q&As on Eve.QA and then move to your own setup if you need more fine-tuned experience.

Eve.QA does one thing well - supports Q&A discussions on cutting-edge topics. Simple and easy :)

Just like many of you, I'm a big fan of TED(x) talks and this one is very special. It does get hard sometimes, and I hope this talk will help many lonely and depressed hackers and entrepreneurs out there! Sam was a great hacker, let's keep up :)

p.s.: perhaps many of you know Sam's story, but I believe this should be shared from time to time.

Just try this: come to Tajikistan and I'll chop off your finger. I promise, it will change the way you feel about the most capable tool you have - YOUR BODY!

or... Post an ad in most popular (non-geek and geek) local newspapers/social groups/newsletters something like...

Pay me to learn quickly and properly (in person): 1. Choosing your best laptop/mobile; 2. Installing/Removing and using ANY program; 3. "0" to power-user of MS-Office and Internet; 4. Special: Find and download ANYTHING that the web has; 5. Special: Web development and e-commerce from scratch to a working online store.

Freelancing isn't just about design/code (I'm a 10+ yr.exp. freelance translator, faaaar from best ones :)))

You'll find good people in need of such skills and YOU need to meet NEW people! How can they know about your soul, voice and smell? (forking your repos?). Be NICE and friendly (not confident!), keep doing mistakes! And "surprise", girls want to learn too! Basta! :))
