Who is the new Stephen King? I suppose answering my question will automatically also give an answer to yours.

I think this opens a huge can of further questions: what is a Stephen King? Is it a best selling author who's a house name, a very successful genre author, one who spans genres and is successful in all of them, one whose' books get regularly translated to TV, a very good craftman of books that people actually read...

My feeling is that there isn't and _won't be_ a new Stephen King that checks all the boxes, due to declining readership and reduced barriers to independent publishing.

Is it a kind of computer-assisted Nomic [0]?

Nomic vibes indeed

In practice lot of applications hard-coded some elements' color while following the theme for other elements, making dark theme unusable because you end up with black text imposed by the developers over the black background you choose for your theme, and other similar issues.

Still a problem today, with a lot of terminal programs assuming the background will be dark!

An arrestation is a violent activity. Something doesn't stop being violent because it's justified.

I use Firefox since it started. At first because I liked it's license. Later because I was in love with the way I'd did things and the add-ons ecosystem it spawned. The first major disagreement came when the search bar merged with the location bar. Then FTP support was disabled. Then RSS bookmarks thingy was removed. Then that stupid hamburger menu appeared. Then features I don't even understand like Pocket appeare. But I continued to use Firefox because the alternatives were worse. Now I keep using Firefox because of apathy and I'm basically the boiled frog of lore.

Firefox is a quintessential example of controlled opposition

I've tried a few time to read le Journal du Hacker, the french-speaking clone of Hacker News and each time I've found that the writing level is so low it's basically unreadable.

Then the VPN provider does geolocation instead and get the list of hosts you accessed

At the very least the VPN provider promises not to and their reputation depends on their not being caught doing this. Whereas your ISP and various sites you visit will already be collecting this data no matter what.

Being put in contact with foreign contents? Disgusting! /s

More seriously, before Netflix I never knew how high-quality and fun was stuffs from all around the world. I watched great series from South Korea, Turkey, Jordan, Spain,France, Luxembourg, Germany, Scandinavian countries and South America. I also watched quite enjoyable movies from Nigeria. I probably forgot a few places too. Do Netflix has issues? Plenty. Their originals are often blands and cancelled. They taught me to seek mini-series and completed series instead of ongoing series. The wrestling they air is shit. But the availability of foreign contents is the coolest feature they have.

> before Netflix I never knew how high-quality and fun was stuffs from all around the world.

The only reason Netflix brought them in is because the big copyright holders (Disney etc.) pulled most of their content from Netflix.

There were a few years when Netflix was a desert.

So, silver lining to every cloud I guess :)

Yeah, same here. Foreign content is good thing about Netflix, the thing I enjoyed the most when I randomly run into it. Sure, novelty will wear off after a while, but at least it is not the same thing over and over and over.

Knowing mega corps will suck my blood thanklessly is of no solace.

You can also see it that way: big corps are funding the computing cost to ingest and propagate your ideas to millions of people, for free to you.

The alternative would be to setup yourself a system that could serve those people.

The way things are going, I’m not sure if the mega corps will ever truly turn a profit off the blood sucking. Maybe suck some USA tax money for a bailout…

In the meantime, there are lots of actual humans trying to do things who will benefit from your knowledge being repackaged and delivered by the blood suckers.

I honestly can’t wrap my head around people getting excited about companies ingesting their work to munge up and sell without compensation or any attribution. I’m sure the feeling is mutual, but I really don’t get it.

That grandma is dead. The online grandma is her daughter.

*You changed your post and now mine doesn't make sense anymore. I forgive you but don't do it again.

Fixed it for you.

Haha thanks ;)
