You can F with America all you want. You absolutely cannot F with China.

also scrutinize every dependency you introduce. I have seen sooooo many dependencies over the years where a library was brought in for one or two things which you can write yourself in 5 minutes (e.g. commons-lang to use null-safe string compare or contains only)

Sure but you basically need a different ecosystem to bring in a popular package and not expect to end up with these trivial libraries indirectly through some of the dependencies.

Said scrutinizing from my side consists of checking the number of downloads and age of the package, maybe at best a quick look at the GitHub.

Yes, I'm sure many dependencies aren't very necessary. However, in many projects I worked on (corporate) which were on the older Webpack/Babel/Jest stack, you can expect node_modules at over 1 GB. There this ship has sailed long ago.

But on the upside, most of those packages should be fairly popular. With pnpm's dependency cooldown and whitelisting of postinstall scripts, you are probably good.

the only thing that matters is whether or not you are getting your money’s worth. nothing else matters. if claude is worth $100 or $200 per month to you, it is an easy decision to pay. otherwise stick with $20 or nothing

why?

I tried your approach with a contractor working on my kitchen - ask her if she will do all the work for free - nope. so dumb

Well the other contractor (ChatGPT) will happily do it for free. From a comparison perspective, his complaint is valid.

ChatGPT without a login is basically a 5 minute free trial with no integration with any other system besides web search.

You get bumped down to a way worse experience almost immediately and the login nags are so strong that logged-out use is almost certainly going away in the near future.

It’s like the contractor that comes over for free but mainly does so to find every possible problem in your house that they might be able to charge you for.

If I got a contractor now that offered it for free there is exactly 0.00006% chance I would take it (job is $40k-ish). nothing is free :)

also, please just do not use X

Ok, fine, but do you have a better way to build a bot following and expose oneself to trending MAGA memes?

“truth” social :)

brave is about as private as a public library :)

there are for sure a ton of browser extensions that will do this

exactly what we need, more cameras everywhere

I mean, yes? The cameras do help solve a ton of crime. The real issue is using them for surveillance without a cause, and that imo this is what should be under scrutiny. But trying to fight cameras existing in general is a lost cause imo

I have literally never seen or thought of this as “senior” thing. if anyone on the team regardless of their seniority does not operate this way they will see a quick exit to some other place
