Hey, great list!

Just wanted to give a shoutout to Netlify, great free tier and very easy to use

main language: JavaScript

on top: TypeScript, Node, Express, React, Postgres Other: Webpack, yarn, scss

other: Heroku, GitHub

Out of curiosity, what is keeping you on Heroku?

It's a good question. Since they disabled the automatic deployment it has been causing some issues and I'm revalidating using Heroku. The main reason is the ease of use

Would you suggest something alternative? AWS?

I don't know in terms of pricing. But I moved a couple of free heroku apps to fly.io and it was pretty smooth. They provide a migration guide specific to people moving out of heroku.

DigitalOcean App Platform

Is there something similar for EU citizens?

Wow, how can a system be designed like this? There is no warning or notification when creating a new account, the old account just goes to 'limbo' mode...

I still get notifications on my phone from the logged in account, but when trying to access it's asking for phone verification, which obviously doesn't work because there is no phone number tied to the account!

There is literally a topic with the problem in their help. Their phone number is on timeout for a week. Sucks but not being able to read sucks even more.

>>Have an alt account, or help a friend complete their verification? Your phone has just been registered and is on timeout. Unfortunately we can not lift this, and you will need to wait for the end of the timeout to use the number once more, or use a different number to verify the account.

Web developer (React ecosystem) Macbook Pro M1 PRO, 16gb/1tb (I wanted to buy 32gb/1000tb but it was either or)

1. More quiet and less hot than any previous intel macs I have used

2. Nothing missing, there was some discussion in earlier project where some fork/similar of Kubernetes wouldn't work

3. see previous, should be ok; running atm Docker. but i would google your frameworks and see if compatibility issues

4. I would go for 32gb/1tb if it is an option, otherwise 16gb is ok - I haven't felt the need for more (running parallels, some vms, docker, ide, chrome, firefox, safari, chat progrems (discord, slack, other), etc)

Still, nothing compares even remotely to my windows PC at home (32gb ram, m2ssd, i9) - it is so responsive that any mac feels sluggish and slow; but I think this could be because windows prioritises UI processes? Everything feels instant compared to mac (x ms delay opening anything etc)

One of my first touches to web development was to write a small web application and to deploy it Heroku.

Seeing my app live on Heroku made a really lasting effect, and now several years later I am still using Heroku (paid) and I am very happy client.

But - If Heroku didn't have a free tier then, I wouldn't probably have tried Heroku, maybe even knew what Heroku is

From my (client, paid) perspective, this seems very weird move, although maybe needed to save in costs; but maybe an approach like GitLab where you deprecate unused projects would work better?

Why would physical (passport, cash) be excluded if digital option is added?

It shouldn't, but if history is any indication, the new will replace the old. Especially if they conjure some kind of feel-good reason, like fighting against terrorists or something.

Example from today - I was in a supermarket and all self-checkout machines that accept cash were defunct except one, so there was a huge queue of people who wanted to pay with cash and no queue of people paying with card.

I see that there is a silent war on cash - they try to make it as inconvenient as possible and then claim not enough people use it to sustain Cash Points, cash self-checkout etc.

Digital money remove agency from people. You no longer own it - you just have access to it that it can be withdrawn on a whim (see Trudeau casus) and then they will be deciding what you can or cannot buy based on your profile. Google about CBDC - programmable money that is in the works. Cash stands in the way.

The self checkouts are a problem in themselves. Where I have the choice, I will always go to a human operated checkout line. I would prefer people have jobs, rather than seeing them taken over by the self-service option.

Also in the UK recently I encountered for the first time a supermarket where self-service was the only option. As I was buying beer, before I would complete my transaction it had to be approved by a human, which seemed to defeat the purpose.

So the government will decide what you can buy because… why?

Big corporations want it? Big corporations want the biggest chunk of your money so they want you to have a “complete” freedom of your money so you can spend it on their products.

All these arguments sound to me like conspiracy theories because I don’t see real examples. Show me a scenario where the government would want you to not buy something. Like what would that be? Guns? Yeah I’m the EU they will block you but that’s because it’s illegal.

Do you feel like they will limit the amount of alcohol you can buy? That would be an example. But prohibition has been tried before. Ppl want alcohol and ppl vote.

Also why would the government care so much about what you buy? If their plan was to control you and stuff why do we have so many privacy laws and initiatives in the EU?

Also this seems like a very long term project. Do you believe the ppl working in the government are soooo competent?

It’s happening already, as noted in my comment above. A fair number of venues in the UK no longer accept cash payments.

It’s very common in Sweden. There’s even tax incentives I believe.

“Kontantfri” is a sign I see very often.

Not really tax incentives but not having to pay some security company to come pick your cash every evening to store it securely in the bank and exchange the bigger notes for smaller ones so you can give change back turns out to be more expensive for smaller shops/cafes then paying whatever card transaction processor you use their ~1% fees.

So at the end of the day accepting cash is more expensive for small shops. (not 100% sure about Sweden but that is the case here in Finland).

Pretty much my exact reaction to this article. There actually was a test period (ended 2020) testing a digital drivers license in Finland!

Only reason I use Spotify (Premium = no ads) is that I don't have to manage my music anymore and I can find all the music I need / want. But holy moly it is going towards a bad direction, in fact so bad that I am considering moving to Apple Music...

Their desktop app used to have a "search bar" in their Home -view which is now moved to a separate "Search" -view, which is.. one of the most annoying things ever.

I used to boot up Spotify, hit ctrl+f, type the playlist or artist I was looking for and click.

Now it's just a mess.

1/5

edit: remove curse words

In the desktop app, press '?' to get a list of shortcuts. Ctrl-l opens search and focuses the input field, from any page. Ctrl-f searches in the current playlist or page.

You can still do a Cmd+L or a Cmd+K (Might be Ctrl instead of Cmd for you) to get to Search.

Try using Apple Music. That shit is 5 years behind Spotify in any UX measure.

Here is dang's answer regarding this matter: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23197966

edit: Updated comment and link to dang's answer

Open sourcing the code base might help. I'm sure there would be no shortage of pull requests to improve all sorts of things on this site that could be improved without too much effort. Plenty of more than qualified readers here. Of course that would increase dang's workload, which I can imagine is not something he's after. But he could fix that by delegating to some trusted people.

But, with a site this big, any change is going to make someone unhappy. So, I can appreciate his hands off approach here.

So we just need someone to take the time to re-colour news.css, and he'll pop it in there under a prefers dark css rule?

It seems a bunch of people have tried it. Some notes:

* Why have people given it a blue-ish tint? HN if anything has a warm tint. I think a neutral grey is most acceptable.

* People that are suggesting high contrast for mobile: On mobile you have a plethora of apps.

* People that are suggesting high contrast for accessibility: People with vision problems likely have some other thing to make it high contrast.

Jeez has it been a year since that comment already? Time flies.

Gotta love the “alligator energy” that kept approximately 10 lines of CSS from being added in the months since that comment. This isn’t rocket science
