Infinite is un-enumerable, but you can carve it up in more or less ways.

No ones anecdotes in this thread are random. The majority of failures are not reading this.

It was on TikTok 6 Days ago...

But not the HN front page, not like this.

I guess HN is realtively "slow" news now?

The James Bay network went offline in less than 90 seconds, giving Quebec its second massive power outage in 11 months.[11] The power failure lasted nine hours and forced the company to implement various mitigation strategies, including raising the trip level, installing series compensation on ultra high voltage lines and upgrading various monitoring and operational procedures. Other utilities in North America and Northern Europe and elsewhere implemented programs to reduce the risks associated with geomagnetically induced currents (GICs)

I too whistled at the Aurora Borealis to encourage them. It was legend that if you were overzealous, then the lights could become agitated and come down and cut off your head.

I am from Interior Alaska. Later in life, I heard this same story from someone from Gambell, Alaska in the Bering Sea. That is when it dawned on me, that if you are outside whistling for too long, someone/something might come and cut off your head. Interior Alaskans and Coastal Alaskans used to kidnap each other with enough regularity to give precedence to such legends.

Is it Go Dot or Go Dough? Asking for a friend :)

/ˈɡɒdoʊ/ (read like GOD-oh)

see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32358256

Either, but the developers aparently say "go dot"

Their logo is a robot. "Go dot" rhymes with "robot". I always assumed that it was a purposeful misdirection using the popularity of "Waiting for Godot" to lead people to mispronounce it as "guh-doh". I know I'm wrong, but I like that story better than the real one.

I always thought it was a play on the play, "Waiting for Godot"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Godot

Actually neither, it’s “Guh-doe”.

Actually not, it's

/ˈɡɒdoʊ/ GOD-oh

pronunciation is where phonetic alphabet shines[1] and English totally sucks [2].

The Head and the Heart

I thought men had their brains elsewhere?

The Fourth Way, Gurdjieff, and Ouspensky are worth looking into. The fallacies of man corrupt, especially when dogma serves one master.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Way_enneagram

Huh, that's where the enneagram, which I am aware is currently popular in many western progressive Christian circles, comes to our culture through...

More interestingly, I have probably at some point read a book or an excerpt that this man, with a background in fourth way before a conversion to Orthodoxy, translated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Amis#Mount_Athos

And Robin Amis claimed the Enneagram comes from Mount Athos...? I didn't expect that claim.

EDIT: This is a deeper rabbit hole than I thought. Gurdjieff also reportedly had an impact on Timothy Leary (prominent early psilocybin researcher) and Alan Watts (a former teacher of Fr. Seraphim Rose), among dozens of others...

The occult/new thought movements of the 1800s and 1900s is an absolute cat's cradle of interesting ideas mixed in with cartoonish chicanery and sheer lunacy. I can't afford to simply ignore it because people who went through that pipeline were fed directly into influential roles in translation and instruction in the english speaking Orthodox world, which I dwell in. Just how many similar connections am I going to discover in the next year?

...To some extent this could just be an example of the whole "6 degrees of separation" thing. That, and St. Augustine of Hippo was a Manichaean neophyte and there's other examples out there. Maybe there's something about former seekers of the occult that naturally leads them to places of influence if they end up in the church...

Some of it is interesting.

The idea that humans are (in general) machines and all our reactions are stimuli/response. With occasional glimpses of real consciousness that have potential to be developed. That is interesting to me anyway.

However, a lot of it appears hooey. The numerology type stuff for instance.

Journalism is getting worse, because the market has changed/evaporated. It is another race to the bottom.

There are more journalists in prisons than ever before.

Attention is a currency and we are easily distracted.

> There are more journalists in prisons than ever before.

In Russia or China, I can believe this. But in the USA and most of Europe, I'm going to need a citation before I believe that.
