leaving religion

leaving reddit

avoiding marriage&kids (okay actually i only bring it up cuz the default replies seemed incredibly un hacker news to me, more like boomer news "religion, marriage, kids" lol, bruh one of my college buddies is big into religion and now he is married and has a kid and he used to be almost as smart as me now he probly couldn't program his way out of paper bag)

keeping a productivity computer where I have youtube&hacker news banned via host file

Don't compare your choices to other's. That is unhealthy, whether you admire or dislike their choices.

Certain choices work for some people and make them happy. Perhaps your friend doesn't give a rats ass about coding out of a wet paper bag and sees you as a miserable shut-in.

i'm just sad I can't talk to him about anything more interesting than a marvel movie anymore

there's plenty of venues where you can find people advocating for those lifestyles, hn shouldn't be. the replies to this should be something more like "wrote my own emacs extension" or maybe like "took venture capital from some specific vc" or something...

this kind of ironic self hatred stuff is a big part of why leaving reddit is on my list...

sounds similar to semantic kernel

raised independent bible church/southern baptist, probably 80% fundamentalist.

Now I guess you could consider me a deist, since I think if we are going to define God as some kind of infinite extension of some aspect of humanity then God would have to be a hyper turing machine then in my estimation.

Seems like such a thing could not exist in this universe, but I do actually choose to, loosely, believe something along that line exists, but we couldn't actually interact with or understand an entity like that... on like a mathematical level we couldn't.

So I explicitly disbelieve in a personal god of any kind. There could be a demiurge but I see no reason why it would have moral authority or anything, maybe it could torture you endlessly I guess XD.

"Protecting Americans’ Privacy"

is the second top level bullet point out of 8 top level bullet points

I realize you're making a direct reference but scare-quotes seem more applicable.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes "documents of the FVEY have shown that they are intentionally spying on one another's citizens and sharing the collected information with each other"

peter norvig agrees with you

my suspicion would be that more equitable wealth distribution would make housing even more expensive

in some scenarious even taxing third homes could ultimately reduce the supply of housing

a land value tax on the other hand...

Why would equitable wealth distribution make housing expensive?

My guess is that they meant: If you give a lot of people that previously couldn't afford a house more money it will increase the demand and prices. The issue is that there is a shortage of housing which is primarily due to zoning preventing the construction of houses in a lot of areas.

Ah this implies definition of wealth is purely $ value, not what their inflation-adjusted “afford to buy material goods and services” value.

for any given dollar a middle class/poor household would be more likely to spend it on housing or additional square footage than a richer household

wish this had a better title relating to "her 1925 doctoral thesis that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium"

You say that, but her name all on its own was enough for me to click on the link, because the name gives clues towards being related to physics or the Cold War or something intriguing.

maybe politics is a support vector machine and the division is the hyperplane XD

Kind of, yes. All politics is arbitrary line-drawing. There's a bit more to it in that the lines are contextually dependent on what exactly is being politicked about and usually not static.

i have some spiritual practice suggestions:

1. maintain and improve your emacs&nixos configurations,

2. create a personal database and add new capabilities to it (for example you could start by making a database to track github stars that could for instance store hashes of specific commits)

3. with your newfound data model and programmable/configurable environment, slowly integrate AI into your life

I think you may have replied to the wrong thread? Your comment is non sequitur.

"The biggest problem I have with this manifesto is that there's nothing actionable in it. What are we, the little people who aren't techno-elite billionaires, supposed to do now? Just wait for techno-Jesus to save us?"

Ah, that makes more sense, thank you.

FWIW, I'm going to be using Guix on my next computer.
