Replacing merit with social signaling.. ..sigh..

The enshitification of GitHub continues

Funny how Europe's "concern" for digital health only kicks in when a non US platform starts winning

European regulators and courts have placed a lot of scrutiny on big US tech companies, with frequent fines for privacy violations and potential anti-competitive behavior. Also as noted upthread, they're investigating Meta and Twitter on this specific issue.

You’re getting downvoted but seriously, it took them this long to figure this out? I also suspect they won’t outright ban TikTok, but instead levy a multi-billion dollar fine and let it continue operating.

The fines are typically accompanied with a requirment to change the illegal behaviour.

Considering it was considered "outdated" the day they announced it, it'll be interesting to see how they price a machine that's now even further delayed

This is the smart choice

You keep compatibility with C, can tap into its ecosystem, but you are no longer stuck with outdated tooling

D gives you faster iteration, clearer diagnostics, and a generally smoother experience, even if it doesn't go as far as Rust in terms of safety

I wish more languages would follow this strategy, ImportC is great, let's you port things one step at a time, if required/needed

Let's be honest: who wants to write or generate C bindings? And who wants to risk porting robust/tested/maintained C code incorrectly?

> who wants to write or generate C bindings?

Not me, and not anyone else. Many D users have commented on how ImportC eliminates the tedium of interfacing to me.

And with D, you don't have to write .h interface files, either (although you can, but it turns out pretty much nobody bothers to).

If you are still using GitHub, you have failed

De-risk yourself from Microsoft

Just rename Linux to SystemD OS at this point..

Excuse me, that's GNU/SystemD/Linux.

You joke, but it's a decent comparison. Both GNU and SystemD are projects with a bunch of miscellaneous tools with excessively strong coupling. In GNU's case that's the various userland tools relying on glibc. Both are used in the majority of Linux distros, and while there are distros without them they're not particularly mainstream. Many tools expect their options & custom ways of working, e.g. huge numbers of shell scripts are BASH-specific and need GNU coreutils instead of being portable POSIX shell scripts. Both make developers' lives easier compared to the lowest-common-denominator required by POSIX, which makes sense because POSIX is intended to be a common subset of functionality found across different UNIX OSes.

It's not a perfect equivalence, of course, SystemD diverges more from other UNIXes than GNU does.

Just call it the Red Hat Linux Platform. Both GNU (glibc, binutils, GNU utils, GCC, etc) and Systemd are primarily maintainted by them. Same with Wayland and GNOME.

Red Hat defines what "Linux" is these days.

systemd not SystemD

systemdick

I have never liked the word "manager" because it's rarely useful in practice, the best managers are actually doers who can cut through the performative transparency and "DDoS attack" of constant updates to see when communication is being used to manipulate or mask failure rather than report progress, because the last thing you want is for your employees to become politicians

Stadia was lightyears ahead, but pro-Microsoft media assassinated it with FUD

While "journalists" were busy bootlicking a laggy 720p Android only xCloud beta, Stadia was already delivering flawless 4K@60FPS in a web browser

They killed the only platform that actually worked just to protect Microsoft

This will be a textbook case study in how a legacy monopoly kills innovation to protect its own mediocrity

Microsoft won't survive the century, they are a dinosaur on borrowed time that has already lost the war in mobile, AI, and robotics

They don't create,, they just buy marrket share to suffocate the competition and ruin every product they touch

Even their cloud dominance is about to end, as they are already losing their grip on the European market to antitrust and sovereign alternatives

I remember a video where they went through scyscrapers zooming into a room, where life was moving on and there was a screen inside a room and there was something running on it. I never understood how this was tanked. It was revolutionary.

If you don't use rust, i hate you, you should use rust, and i'll force rust on you

If you don't use systemd, i hate you, you should use systemd, and i'll force systemd on you

If you don't use wayland, i hate you, you should use wayland, and i'll force wayland on you

If you don't use gnome, i hate you, you should use gnome, and i'll force gnome on you

See the pattern?

By aggregating breach data by email, this tool inadvertently exposes users's full web history, including sensitive sites like crypto/adult/dating platforms, to anyone who knows their address

Fun

From the FAQ [1]:

What is a "sensitive breach"?

HIBP enables you to discover if your account was exposed in most of the data breaches by directly searching the system. However, certain breaches are particularly sensitive in that someone's presence in the breach may adversely impact them if others are able to find that they were a member of the site. These breaches are classed as "sensitive" and may not be publicly searched.

A sensitive data breach can only be searched by the verified owner of the email address being searched for. This is done by signing in to the dashboard which involves verifying you can receive an email to the entered address. Once signed in, all breaches (including sensitive ones) are visible in the "Breaches" section under "Personal".

There are presently 82 sensitive breaches in the system including Adult FriendFinder (2015), Adult FriendFinder (2016), Adult-FanFiction.Org, Ashley Madison, Beautiful People, Bestialitysextaboo, Brazzers, BudTrader, Carding Mafia (December 2021), Carding Mafia (March 2021), Catwatchful, CityJerks, Cocospy, Color Dating, CrimeAgency vBulletin Hacks, CTARS, CyberServe, Date Hot Brunettes, DC Health Link, Doxbin and 62 more.

You don't get to gatekeep what counts as "sensitive", all of my privacy is non-negotiable

> Bestialitysextaboo

I laughed pretty hard
