Binary Space partitioning (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_space_partitioning) is an elegant algorithm that solves this issue. This has fallen out of popularity due to the invention of the depth buffer and the power of modern GPUs, but it was used in DOOM and Quake.

This technique, due to the unique limitation of the children's drag-and-drop coding platform, Scratch, has made it proliferate in the 3D community. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1203675921 is an example of such a project.


They seem to point out some examples in section 4 that can't be handled with space partioning. I'll confess I don't follow the reasoning. Figure 4.2 is the go-to example of a sorting problem that is handled with BSP trees.

Hi, it’s me, the author. In this thesis the focus was on techniques that don’t involve splitting the geometry into pieces, and the objects in Figure 4.2 can’t be partitioned without splitting. In later iterations of the implementation I have added splitting and I’ve detailed this in a talk I gave at Blanketcon 2025 (https://douira.dev/assets/document/presentation-blanketcon25...), but the algorithm still attempts to avoid it as much as possible since it can explode the amount of quads in the worst case.

It works, it may just degenerate into a worst case scenario, and this particular scenario is pretty common in minecraft.

I think this is particular to auto-partitioning BSPs where the splitting planes are aligned with scene geometry.


For rendering voxel data like in a minecraft world I’d think an octree would be the go-to data structure.

Okay. BSP trees were the basis of the Doom WAD format and were used for visible surface determination and depth sorting, though. Seems relevant.

Such a thing exists currently, at least for images created by Google and other major AI companies.


This isn't really a problem in tool-assisted LLMs.

Use google AI studio with search grounding. Provides correct links and citations every time. Other companies have similar search modes, but you have to enable those settings if you want good results.

Grounding isn't very different from that.


How would that ever work? The only thing you can do is continue to refine high quality data sets to train on. The rate of hallucination only trends downwards on the high end models as they improve in various ways.

The brightness enhancement film is a transparent optical film. It consists of a three-layer structure. So, it's similar to your design, but the grooves are very small.

The fact that it did this successfully, even if 'easily', suggests it's doing more than just predicting the statistically most likely next token based on prior sequences of 'hammer'. It had to process the definition and perform a conceptual mapping.


I think GP's point was that your proposed test is too easy for LLMs to tell us much about how they work. The "habogink" thing is a red herring, really, in practice you're simply asking what the opposite of driving nails into wood is. Which is a trivial question for an LLM to answer.

That said, you can teach an LLM as many new words for things as you want and it will use those words naturally, generalizing as needed. Which isn't really a surprise either, given that language is literally the thing that LLMs do best.

You don't need Ren'Py-like software for graphic novels unless you want them to be interactive. Even so, it may be difficult for an 8-year-old to learn python and debug something like Ren'Py, especially because half of its use is entirely 18+.

I would recommend something like Scratch. It's a visual scripting language that allows kids to make amazing games and animations. It has all the capabilities necessary with ease and kid-friendly forums and comment sections.
